A current photo contest that I am involved with is titled “reduce, reuse and recycle”, a noble sentiment to be sure. I can not post the photo yet, the jury’s still out, but I will as soon as I am able.

The situation has caused me to think about photography’s ‘green-ness’ in general and mine specifically. I can assure you that photography is much greener than when I first started and most of it is a direct result of the demise of the darkroom and the associated chemicals. Another huge area of improvement came from not using film and the associated chemistry to develop it; instead using easily reusable digital cards. Film costs were once a major consideration for a photographer.

Today, the photographer is about as green as anyone else. We still require electricity to charge our batteries and run our computer ‘lightrooms’. Photographic papers tend not to be recyclable and while I am guilty of using these, my work uses far more fine arts paper which is very much recyclable. The other area of concern to me is the empty ink cartridges from my printer. I can not seem to get a reliable answer about them from anyone so I bring them to the county and trust (hope) they know what to do with them.

The Alliance for the Arts partnered with Florida Shores Bank announced a juried exhibition for all artists where all work will be for sale.

Chelsea Birczack, of the Alliance for the Arts, congratulated Dwight Schofield on having his photographic print “the Strand” accepted for exhibition in this rare opportunity for artists to be recognized in their community. Works were judged by the committee  and selected on visual appeal and quality.

The show will run for an extended period of time beginning July 3, 2008 at the Florida Shores Bank in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Photo Arts Group of Charlotte County, an affiliation of the Charlotte County Arts Guild, sponsored their 19th Annual Photography Show “Photo Expo 2008″ from January 2 to January 26, 2008.

Of the 218 entries, Dwight Schofield’s “Everglades Birds” won Honorable Mention recognition. The judges remarks, “Simplicity and abstract. Creates Intrigue” addresses the outstanding qualities of this print and the entire body of Dwight’s works.
